in the thread on the croppie rod the 11'6" rainshadow spey blank was mentioned. i would be interested in opinions on this blank as a spey rod/switch rod. anyone have any fishing experience with it? i have a 10' rainshadow that i broke. it was wet up as a two handed switch rod with an 8" extension handle. batson may not be able to find a tips since it is discontinued so i thought i might replace it with the 11'6".

Handled a 29 pound salmon with no trouble on the Salmon River in NY state this past fall. They were releasing water the entire five days I was there. Water was running 1750. The week before (you should have been here last week!) was 345.

Regards,
Ken

I fish two handed rods almost exclusively, and I built up this rod. It is more of a 7/8 or even an 8 wt. It likes a Windcutter 7/8/9 or 8/9/10 depending on your casting stroke. For overhead it likes WF11 lines. For the money it is a good blank, but not the equal of fine blanks from makers like Meiser, T&T, Burkheimer, etc. I built mine for overhead casting and broke it right above a ferrule in the first 10 minutes. The defective section was replaced for the normal fee, and the finish on the replacement section was subpar. It is a good blank overall unless you want a top-end, high performance blank that costs 4-5x more.

steve, thanks for the good feedback. it does not sound like this rod fits my needs at the moment. hopefully i can duplicate what i had in the 10' 6wt rainshadow.
