just got a free motor from work along with some extruded aluminum thinking about building a rod lathe the motor is a dayton ac/dc motor 1hp 115volt 10,000rpm ccw rotation motor think this will work?can I use some kind of control knob to slow down the rpms?

Thanx Steve

Steve, it will probably work if it's an AC-DC motor. I use a 1/10 HP Dayton AC-DC (CCW) motor that turns 8,000 RPM. I wired in a fan controller to slow down the speed, which combined with the foot pedal, works just fine. Good luck with the project. Stan

BEWARE, slowing motors down electronicly ONLY , may burn the brushes.
Think about a pulley system, then an electronic control, the motor needs to spin fast enough so it will not over heat.

Dave, the motor I use is connected to the "improved" Pac Bay chuck/headstock. The motor doesn't seem to overheat - so far. Btuches eventually wear-out and have to be replaced somewhere down the line. Everything seems to be working properly (fingers crossed). Stan
