Tamer Guide

Is it most common to make the tamer guide the same size as the stripper or to size the tamer same as the second guide. My casting tests have been inconcluseive.

One size smaller than the stripper is the norm. How well the line taming guide will benefit you has a lot to do with the particular line you're using. Stiffer lines tend to benefit less than more supple lines do.

As Tom mentioned, the tamer is usually one size smaller. I've often used a third guide (i.e. second tamer), that is one size smaller still. So, the first three guides would be sized as follows on a typical rod--12, 10, 8--and would all be within an 8" span. On really light rods, I've done 10, 8, 7. I'm fond of moderate action rods and very supple lines, so the 3 guide set-up will often be the best set-up for me.
Test cast it with both one tamer and with two, and go with the set-up that gives you the most distance. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
