I use Titebond for checkerboards and cinch them with large cable ties

I use waterbased formica countertop adhesive (from Home Depot). It's a waterbased rubber/latex that's applied in similar fashion as rubber cements where you apply to both pieces then put them in contact. I build the checkerboard then sandwitch the pattern between plain cork rings and clamp them together with the ingenious clamp that was showcased 6-8 months ago here. In using the countertop adhesive any excess can be rinsed off with warm water but once it sets it's waterproof. It also works well on EVA and Hypalon inserts where it remains flexible (no sharp glue lines). Of course you still need two part epoxy for keeping them in place on the rod blank.
