Dumb and Dumber!

I am asking Tom not to reply to this post too quickly.

I have learned methods and techniques from this board that have allowed me to increase building speed and the quality of rods. I am going to detail a scenario on a recent rod and ask you to tell me the reason for the problem.

Took an order on Sunday for a rod for delivery on the following Friday. Had all the stuff in the shop.

Sunday night - reamed preformed cork rear grip and foregrip, scoured blank with Scotch brite, fit up exposed bland Fuji seat and arbor, spined rod. Mixed and applied Rod Bond. Slid everything into place and wiped off excess Rod Bond that extruded through holes in cork, what oozed from between the seat and cork joint and from the exposed section on the seat. After verifying everything in place and aligned properly I thoroughly wiped the entire surface of the cork and seat completely clean with a paper towell soaked with denatured alcohol. Set the assembly inverted on a horizontal rack to dry overnight.

Monday - butt wrap, load test and guide spacing, grind guides and wrap all guides with A nylon thread. Line up guides and apply first coat of finish thinned with small amount of acetone. Let dry overnight.

Tuesday early - trim thread nubs. Place on wrapper and spin grip and apply wet coat of True Oil and sand with extra fine sanding stick. Apply second coat of finish, full flow coat unthinned. Place on turner to dry. Wait eight hours and apply waterslide decals.

Wednesday morning - apply top coat of finish to cover decal - none needed on guides. Place on turner to dry. Home free or so I thought.

Friday noon - locate customer via cell phone and tell him something came up and I did not get his rod completed and it will be the middle of next week before it will be ready.

Is it evident to you what I did wrong? I wish I had read more carefully!

Gon Fishn

1) NO CP over decal before epoxi? not a hard fix unless you need another decal?
2) Didn't mention anything about SANDING DUST in between sanding and applying epoxi.? could require a strip and re-wrap?
3) How do you set a rod inverted on a horizontal rack? if towel was SOAKED in denatured could the denatured have seeped under
the handle assembly and effected the bond? just a guess?

Bill,

I would have thought you would know better than use actone. I would not touch a rod with one molecule of acetone. LOL what that stuff can do to destory a rod! To quote Ralph O'Quinn, "Acetone has no place in rod building!"

I have never used Tru-oil on cork. I would be afraid to try it on a customer's rod. Tru-oil does work wonders on wood. I prefer U-40 cork finish on cork.

While the CP question might change the color of the thread, I doubt the lack of it would have created a mess.

Don't tell me you had so much of that purple and gold flock fling around that you ended up flocking the whole rod by accident.

Lastly don't get in too big of a hurry for a custom rod.

Look forward to seeing you in Charlotte.

I use thinners in finish and never had a problem ? Actone evaporates faster.

I'm sure you prepped the reel seat as well as the blank. Stan

Bill,
Whatever it is rember we are capable of making mistakes especially under stress.
Either you forgot to mention it or you forgot to spine the rod blank before the grips and reel seat went on?

Tight wraps and lines,

The spine probably wouldn't be a concern. If the blank was slightly bowed, however, that would probably be more of a concern if it was overlooked for a customer. Stan.

It has something to do with the handle assembly, the blank exposed reel seat, soaked denatured towel. with the big culprit being "inverted on a horizontal rack to dry overnight".
