Hello guys and gals,
I am thinking about buying a light duty wood lathe. I was looking a girzzly and chose one but was unable to buy an arbor and drill chuck to do the boring. I was able to buy the three jaw chuck. I also have a message into Andy Dear and will get his Video. I NEED ADVICE. As you can tell I nothing about lathes. I use a flexcoat cork lathe to turn my cork handles now, but I need to add to my addictions and try to make my reel seats and grips a little more attractive and specialized. I will be grateful for all you help. Thanks, John Blair Re: wood lathe purchase

I bought a light duty wood lathe from Grizzly awhile back I got the drill chuck to fit it from them. If memory serves me you need a drill chuck on a #2 morse taper. Not sure what you mean arbor, are you talking about a mandrel? Re: wood lathe purchase

Hello Scott.........
I mean the arbor that goes in the tailstock so that you can bore out the grip or reel seat. You are right it is a morse taper 2....but the one they have has to be cut somehow to fit the tail stock of the lathe.....I probally don't know enough about a lathe to describe very well on what I mean. May be another waste of money on my part....Thanks for your help Scott. John Blair Re: wood lathe purchase

John,
I have a Penn State Turnmaster Pro. I had the same problem as you when I bought my Drill Chuck with #2 morse taper. I figured out that if you just turn your Tailstock out a little bit the chuck will fit like it should. If you turn it all the way in it will push the chuck out. Bill in WV Re: wood lathe purchase

John, I probably have pretty much the same lathe. The Morse taper on the drill fits in the tail stock after you remove the center. I can take a picture and email it to you if that would help.

William,
Same here on the Delta Midi lathe. Probably made by the same company too. LOL Re: wood lathe purchase

John, check out this website, www.Pennstateindustries.com . They have a lathe "starter" set that looks pretty decent. The starter set is for pen turners, and comes with some stuff you may or may not want to get into. I've started making pens and other gadgets and it fills the time between building rods. I know a few of the guys on the board here have the turncrafter pro series and seem to like it. I have a Jet midi and it does everything I want it to do, but it is more expensive than the penn state lathes. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
