Strange? Custom rod rebuild question

Well, probably, but that's beside the point. I was wondering...

Saw what was at one time a really nice custom rod at one time at a store here in Tampa for $20. A custom rod wrapped by Bill Boyd. Not sure where, have heard the name before.

It was a very unique rod. Somewhat soft, parabolic yellowish fiberglass blank, Aftco regular chrome roller guides (corroded), a very unique short wooden butt that I'm thinking was crafted specifically for this rod. A strange older chrome type reel seat that seemed to have a ferrule in it. I'm not sure what the rod was designed for, but sure it was a blast in its day for light line.

I don't know why, but I had this strong urge to buy it and rebuild it. It was almost sad to see such a unique piece of work in such condition. It needed to be completely rewrapped and new guides. As I sat there and pondered, wondered what in the world I'd use it for, I found myself thinking "I can build a brand new rod, however I want to, why dump money into someone else's design". Surely a newer graphite blank with LWR's has to be lighter and can do about the same job, better reel seats nowdays.

l'm still tempted to go back and buy it. I don't even know what I'd do with it. Was wondering if any of you guys run into anything similar if you come across something you find interesting, or am I just a tackle "ho". :)

Phil

It's happened to me, some of my grandfather's rods are setting in a place of honor in my home. Use one of his old 6 1/2 ft rods, refurbished, as a trout trolling rod and to throw an ocassional crankbait.

Bill Boyd Custom Rods was/is a semi-production shop in Florida. Decent rods, pricey but popular.
