help with splicing blank

Here is what I did. I had a 6’9” blank that I wanted to make into a 8 ft spinning rod. I added a 12” extension to it by splicing it together with a scrap piece of blank . My intentions where to build a split grip with a split reel seat and no fore grip. As I laid it out I find that the splice is several inches above the reel seat [about where the fore grip was to go]. What can I do to ensure that the splice won’t fail? I thought about fitting another piece of blank over it? I had one fail on me last year inside the reel seat and just wanted to improve my chances.
Thanks in advance

How to extend blanks and maintain their structural integrity was fully covered in a past issue of RodMaker - reading it will improve your "chances" like nothing else. What you've done, may work, but it's not the best way. The splice is most likely going to be weaker than either of the pieces you're connecting by virtue of its smaller diameter. If it's a thick, solid piece, and stronger or stiffer than the pieces you're connecting, you've now got a situation with stress areas at each of the splice. You may get by with it - you may not.

The ideal situation, is to build the entire handle on a separate and slightly larger diameter blank or piece of aluminum or titanium tubing and then oversleeve the butt of your blank. You can effectively get almost any length you want this way. If using a scrap piece of blank, you will want to reinforce the forward edge of your extension with a thread wrap. If using tubing, no reinforcement is necessary. You'll need an overlap that is roughly a length equal to about 5 or 6 times the diameter of the blank butt. Don't ask me to go into all the mathematics of that - just trust it to give you all the strength you can get from such an overlap. Anymore is overkill.

Failing redoing what you have now. It might be a good idea to at least oversleeve the joint with a piece of scrap blank. You could possibly extend it back to the reel seat so the appearance isn't that of a sudden enlargement right at the joint.

If it's a really light rod you might be okay. If it's a heavier rod I'd put a piece over the splice or redo it like Tom said.
