It depends on how many pieces you have, the rod's action and response and whta you are aiming at?
Give some details about that and then we can help. Re: Guide spacing for 8'6" 5wt IM6???

Lance,
if you're going to be building rods you really, really, really need to learn how to do this for yourself. It's not at all hard and once you understand how, you'll never again have to ask anyone where they would locate guides on your blank. Read the articles in the online library. Invest 30 minutes in learning how to do all this and free yourself forever from having to rely on somebody else for your guide spacing. ........................ Re: Guide spacing for 8'6" 5wt IM6???

Good advice. From your post last week, I am guessing that this blank is the H&H IM6 kit, right. I have that blank in my shop and mine CC's at 5.79/64. If you go to the St. Croix website, you can get spacing for an 865 2pc. rod. This H&H blank is not slow and not fast, so not a bad candidate for a generic chart. But, set it up according to the St. Croix spacing for starters, put it under load and then make adjustments as necessary once you look at the stress distribution according to the library article. Personally, I always start with the St. Croix spacing and then tweak as necessary. Re: Guide spacing for 8'6" 5wt IM6???

Tom,
Thanks for your expert advice. I was trying to get some other info as there are differing schools of thought on where to put guides, as you know so very well, and that I am unfamilar with. I have read your article on Static Guide placement, and plan on using it to put my guides on my first rod. I was curious as to how that matched up to what other people said. As for me trying to stop relying on others, and learning for myself, that is what I am attempting to do. Thanks for the admonishment! my posts will be much less frequent. It wasn't an admonishment - it was meant to alert you to the fact that you can do a much better job yourself, since you know what handle length you'll be using, what reel, etc., etc. Nobody can do your guide spacing better than you can, provided you have the basics behind you.

Thank you for the clarification. I felt that you were put out with me for asking so many questions. Thats the only bad part about message boards is that it is easy to misunderstand someone. Thanks again for clarification, have a good day/ Re: Guide spacing for 8'6" 5wt IM6???

Hi Lance,
Anybody here willing to answer your questions does not feel "put out" if they felt that way they would just not give a responce at all! Just try and be more discriptive with your questions and try "searching" the archives for other posts with the same subject. If you do have a question try and be as specific as possible. There can be many many variables as you already know. Have fun and I am looking forward to seeing more posts! With the right questions, we all can learn a little! Do you know how to use the SEARCH FUNTION of this site? most of your questions can and will be answered by first seeing what has already be said learn to use it. Then come with questions. Start with a St Croix spacing chart, add a guide, then use the procedure in the libarary to space them better then a factory rod. Not tring to sound harsh but like said there are people that are lazy and do not want to learn and want every one else to do it for them. It is easy don't be afread to try on your own.
