Permagloss Finish

I am building a rod using a Rainshadow IST 1085FG blank. This blank is olive green and came with a beautiful gloss finish. In the past I have built on a Matt Black finish and I have used the Permagloss as a final gloss/protective finish for the whole blank and I think it looks quite good. I was wondering if this new Rainshadow blank could also be finished with the permagloss or does the manufacturers finish provide the same protection as the permagloss. Oh and if I do decide to finish the blank with permagloss should I scuff the existing finish up a little before appling the new Permagloss finish.
Thanks Steve Re: Permagloss Finish

Steve------If the rod has a factory finish all I do is use a good quality auto polish/wax. Re: Permagloss Finish

Steve,
If the rod has a factory finish, leave it alone. This applies to either a matte or gloss finish, since both are applied to the "raw" blank by the manufacturer. Adding a second coat of Permagloss (or another finish) does nothing but add weight to the blank, resulting in slowing the performance of the finished rod. On a 9 ft. 5 wt. (trout) rod that is the last thing that you want. Trust the manufacturer; if their finishes didn't hold up, they would be out of business. Jim Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
