Credit Card Method

I've read references to the "credit card" method of applying epoxy instead of brushes and would appreciate more info. I did a search and I couldn't find detailed info as to exactly how to do it.

Is the rod rotating as you use the card? If so, I can see where it may be easier on the portion of the wrap over the blank area such as on a ferrule wrap or over lettering, but how do you manipulate the card in the area of the guide foot as the rod is rotating? Seems like that would be tricky. Or, is this technique not used on guide wraps?

Ralph,

I find the credit card method does a better job for me (than the brushes) of producing smooth flexcoated wraps. The rod is turning while I do it. I tend to use a rather narrow piece of card (about 5/16 inch). Glop some Flex Coat near one end of the wrap (away from the guide) and smooth it out, first covering just past the end of the wrap then toward the other end. I kind squeegee the finish in the direction I wish it to go. May have to add more flex coat if I don't feel I've enough to provide good coverage.

Basically it is about the same thing I do when I use the brushes.

Getting aroud the guide feet isn't much of a problem.....I'm just careful to get total coverage.

I use Flex Coat Lite....usually need 3-4 coats

Playing cards are great! You get 52 "leveler/spatulas" for a buck. I cut one the length of the wrap and with the rod turning, I hold it lightly against the finish which evenly distribute the finish and give you a nice smooth finish

Mike although you probably have been using playing cards for a long time dont they contain a silicone finish to allow them to slide against each other??

The boxes always say "plastic Coated. I got the idea from others on the board and have never had any problem with them

I use a plastic palette knife. Very flexible. Package of different styles from the craft store. The narrower tips allow you to work around the foot a little more easily. I do not rotate under power when applying epoxy.
