I want to replace a cork handle on a 4 piece fly rod.
How do I go about removing the finish from the thread wraps holding the hook keeper in place and the finish over the brand name and specs without marring the surface of the blank underneath? The brand name and specs was written on the blank using a fine point gold paint pen. I'm assuming I'll have to remove the writing as well, as it will be damaged during the refit??? I'm just replacing the cork grip not the reel seat. It is a mat finish blank. Thanks for any info. Re: Cork grip replacement...??? fly rod

Heat with a hair drier or heat gun ( just don't get too hot) then just nick the finish, and it should peel right off. Bill in WV Re: Cork grip replacement...??? fly rod

Shave the finish from the top of the hook keeper ( do not cut into the blank( and pop the keep off. Then grab a thread end and unwind it.
I don't normally heat anything to do this, but unless you really get things too hot it shouldn't hurt anything. Now remember that you don't have to remove the grip all the way down to the blank. If you'll just turn it down to a small cylinder, and then bore the new grip to fit, you can install the new on over the remains of the old one. This might save you from having to remove your inscription and threadwork. ................... Re: Cork grip replacement...??? fly rod
