Cork ring handles and burl??

I am going to take a stab at making my own full weels grip handle with a fighting butt. I do not have a lathe, can the shape be created by simply sanding? Also I thought of putting in a few Burl Rings (for variety). How is this usually done? Thanks

Glue the rings together. Find a scrap piece of STRONG scrap blank to fit after drying. Some times a spiral of masking tape or reaming of the cork, will help for a tight fit. Fit onto a drill and support the other end. May take some tril and error.
If the blank does not fit " I have a 3/8 chuck, glue in another piece of scrap blank the correct size for the drill.

I mount my rings on a steel mandrel and then chuck that into the lathe and turn on that. Because I pre-bore them before hand to closely approximate the OD of the blank where I intend them to reside, I have very little reaming to do to get that final fit to the blank.

This is fully covered in the Amato book, Rod Building Guide as well as in the how-to article in a past issue of RodMaker.
