i wrap small stream fly rods for trout, generally about 10-12 inches whihc can give an understanding of the pressure the guides might endure. i've recently noticed stripper guides like pac bay's tungsten carbide guides (model TC) and their light wire LXBG. i kind of like the look of the all metal construction. can anybody offer some input regarding these used as strippers in comparison to the standard ceramic inserted strippers? i think hopkins and halloway offers something in an all metal construction too. thanks

It would be the type stripper used on bamboo fly rods traditionally. I also use it on all my graphite rods as well... it looks better with the snake guides... IMO.

Eric, I seem to be chasing you all over the forums! In any event I have completed several bamboo rods using the LXBG and XSGs and I think they look great, as does the H & H. I will sometimes use a 10 and an 8, or a 12 and a 10 on the same rod. You can also use a smaller chrome XSG in front of a ceramic or agate insert guide and it looks very nice to my eye. The XBG would look okay, but I would probably use a ceramic instead. Re: non-insert fly rod strippers

How about the Recoil strippers Eric? They have no insert and should bare the pressure put on them. Re: non-insert fly rod strippers

ah mikko, recoils... something i'd like to check out someday, build a rod with them see, how they work, but what i'm looking for is actually a retro style appearance. those recoils are a bit modern looking for me. of course form and function are closely related for me so i was wondering about the pros and cons of the older style strippers. thanks.
