The "NEW" in the title really was new, in about 1986 or 1987.

THE NEW Advanced Custom Rod Building, by Dale P. Clemens $30. "Dale Clemens has completely rewritten this new book ..." (copyright 1987). The "original" version was copyrighted in 1978. DPC's Custom Rod Thread Art was written in 1982... Man, the older you get, the more time flies - whether you are having fun or not ! Each year is now "1 / N-th" (1 over N years) of your life !!! -Cliff Hall+++

The book is widely available for less than $20. Do a google search. Thought I'd mention this should anyone miss out on this one offer.

The second editiion was NOT completely rewritten. They are 90% identical. I have both and there is very little difference. The second one has a few more color plates. So if you find the first at a good deal go ahead and get it. It's pretty much just the same.

Hi, Shawn M. - Agreed. The "New" 1987 version is more like a massive update and revision of the original 1978 version, than a successor that is independent of the first edition. That's the blurb used in the on-line catalog from which I snagged the text quoted. Excitatory semantics, if you ask me. Short & sweet, and truncated, I might add.

The many new plates & illustrations in the New edition are well worth the price of the book alone, IMO. Those pictures on the guide ring size and height off the blank, and grips, etc are worth a thousand words. And the revision of the guide placement discussion and tables is worth consulting, too. I think the 1978 Version did a better job of presenting the Geometric Progression Spacing Formula for those rod-builders who want to investigate the usefulness of that method in the grand scheme of their rod- building design considerations. ... IMO, having BOTH editions, if possible, is well worth the investment.

I just know that I and 10,000+ other rod-builders would be very curious to see what Clemens would say today if he wrote a 3rd edition of his classic text N-ACRB. ... Since Clemens is not likely to be doing that, we can refer with confidence to the new guardian of the craft at large and it's texts: Tom Kirkman's Rod Building Guide (copyright 2001. 51 pages. $15) and his RodMaker Magazine (bi-monthly), now in its 8th, and about to enter its 9th, year. ... -Cliff Hall+++

I can find the book elsewhere, but does anyone have a suggestion on a bday gift for my husband, who is interested in building his own rods? I went to this site to see if there were any local workshops. Also saw good reviews for the book titled "Rod Building Guide," by Tom Kirkman. I was hoping for something more recent, but maybe not much changes.
I was thinking of putting together a package to include a book and maybe some starter tools.
Thanks for any advice.

Windy,

Rodbuilding Guide by Tom Kirkman is as current as you can get!! It would be a great gift maybe along with a Ken Preston or Doc Ski DVD. Is he a new builder?

In the world of general books on custom rod-building, Tom Kirkman's (TK's) "Rod Building Guide" (copyright 2001. 51 pages. $15) is about as recent as it gets, Only a quality journal or magazine could keep up with the craft. Consider a subscription to TK's RodMaker Magazine (RMM) for keeping up with the greatest and latest in rod-building. RMM is published bi-monthly (every even-numbered month of the year) and is only $27 annually. -Cliff Hall+++

Thanks, Mike. Well, my husband found my notes at the computer and said he didn't want a rod-building book. He wants someone to show him what to do. So, I guess either the DVD you suggested or a seminar would be the way to go.

Anyone know of a seminar in the Hampton Roads, VA area? I read about the Charlotte seminar in Feb, which might be the closest.

Thanks again Mike.
