Rods turning a cloudy white color

I have seen guides that would turn white in the rain i assume this is because the guide was not sealed prooerly.A freind of mine called me and told me that he has 4 rods that he keeps in his boat that have turned a cloudy white color the entire length. Two are loomis and two are st crouix. What is causing this is it moisture in the rod locker and if so will they clear up in the sun? Thanks Sam

If they are all the same color it is probably due to something that he has used to wash them down with or a residue of a wax or WD-40. Snoop around, clean the surfaces with something like Simple Green and let them dry in the sun. If you are lucky that just may be the problem.

I have a factory, G-loomis IMX, That does the same thing when I fish in the rain with it, it always clears back up when it dries out, But has always made me wonder, I have I think a diawa rod that turns milky hazy as well, but the whole rod has finish on it, and the whole rods turns white-ish. Again, always goes back fairly clear and never had any problems??? Must be the type of finish.

I have 2 green SCV (1 casting and 1 spinning) rods that turn cloudy wherever drops of water settle on them. They always clear up in a few hours of being dry. I've always wondered why they do that too.

Are some manufacturers using some kind of SHELLAC on their rod blanks ? That's the only kind of finish I thought would itself turn cloudy. Like the old days of furniture finish when the condensation on a cool drink would leave white rings or halos around the glass. -Cliff Hall+++
