The last 3 issues of Rod Maker Mag. covers just about everything that has to do with Custom Rod Pricing.
Here is the short answer. "what ever the market will bear". \
Longer answer. A lot of builders charge between 5$ & 10$ plus parts cost for a guide fix or replacement. The other stuff depends on how much time & effort is involved. Would you just order a decal with the customer's name or would you weave it on? or just write with marker? Marker = cheapest or even free, Decal = 10$ +decal cost , Weave = 50$ or more. These are just examples of what some charge.

Most minor repairs and embelishment I do for free 99% of the time.

I was at a popular offshore store in Maryland and if I remember correctly the labor rate was $55 an hour.Dont kown if that was actual time or flat rate though.

Rates by the hour are tough to figure - not everybody works at the same pace and there is no standardized rate book or chart to charge by. If you go this route, carefully consider what you'll actually be making and be sure to raise your rates as you become more profficient and are able to do more work in less time.

When I was actively involved in rod repair, I charged $5 for a repair wrap, plus the retail price of the guide. Underwraps were $1 extra, trims or inlays were .50 each. This was some 10 years ago so these rates may no longer be realistic. To put a name on a rod with dry transfer letter and cover over it with epoxy finish, was $20.

How much to charge?: A minimum of ~ $100 above cost of parts, for the simplest custom rod for profit. Anything less is a labor of love. IMO, -Cliff Hall, Gainesville, FL-USA+++

"This varies a great, great deal from builder to builder. I think you would want to price out the parts at full retail, and your labor should come in so that you make a minimun of $100 per rod. That could also be much, much more depending on the amount and quality of work you do. In no case should you sell for less than a comparable factory counterpart, unless this is something you're doing for a family member, etc.

One last thing - the customer has no business in knowing how much of the final price is parts and how much is labor. He would not be given this information if he bought a commercially made rod and no custom builder should break down the price in that manner either. Trust me, it leads to problems." -TK

Thanks for the additional information, Cliff. I should point out that my last bit of info there in your post relates more to rods than it does to repair. In repair work, the customer will have to know what it parts and what is labor mainly due to the fact that you only charge state sales tax on the parts, not the labor portion. On a finished rod, the sales tax is paid on the complete rod - parts and labor combined.
