Large cork rings

A father of a friend of mine gave me a plastic bag full of never -been-used cork rings. It's pretty good cork. The hole diameter is 3/8. All the rods I build reguire smaller handles. Question?.... can I glue them separately on a 3/8 dowell, then square cut each one off and reame the center smaller? Will this doctored cork ring with a wooden center be ok to turn for handles? Thanks Steve

You're probably better off buying really crappy cork rings, gluing them to teh blank, sanding them down, and gluing these over them. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has excess crappy cork, lol.

Reaming a wood center will not be a lot of fun. What is the outside diameter of your rings? If these are large diameter rings, there is some demand for them. You might offer a trade on the buy/sell page for smaller rings with a smaller bore.

Yeap, actually there is a lot of demand for large cork rings, but we rodbuilders use what we have near our hands, and rod factories are sacrificing quality on their cork grips, sometimes justifing that the slim design is lighter!? ... And this last "phrase" came from Hi-End Fly Rod Manufacturer !!!
In my experience, the better cork quality including cork handles used in fine rods, was last seen between 1995 and 2000.-

Tom´s right ... You might want to offer them for trade and get an excellent deal.
