I'm looking to order one of the Forecast Steelhead/Salmon blanks. The 9' blank that I like weighs 3.34 ounces. Another one I like is the 10'6" that is 3.85 ounces. What would components such as standard grip and foregrip with maybe a Fuji graphite reel seat and Fuji Alconites weigh? I realize the longer blank would take a few more guides and wraps but was wondering if the 9' would stay under 6 ounces total? Thanks. Re: Ballpark - components weight on spinning rod?

I think it would. I'd have to guess but I think the grips and seat and butt cap would add the most weight. Guides almost nothing. I think they stuff together might reach 3 ounces but that would be about it. I'm guessing but if you use cork and a lightweight seat I can't see the stuff weighing much more than that. Hi I just recently put a 38cm long rear grip, fuji style reelseat with arbors glued in and a fore grip on the scale.
Both rear grip and fore grip was reamed to fit and there was an pac bay rubber butt cap too, they made a total of 98 grams of weight. with glue it maybe would be about 100 grams? Epoxy is heavy. 1oz = 28,35 gram I think. thanks -Kim- Re: Ballpark - components weight on spinning rod?

I'm not all that familiar with steelhead/salmon rods and their grip requirements, but you could always consider lowering the amount of weight by simply going to a split grip. Again, that might not be practical for this type of rod--I don't know enough to say--but I can't anticipate any problems it would create. . . . Re: Ballpark - components weight on spinning rod?

DPS seats:
18 - 0.895oz 20 - 1.08oz 22 - 1.84oz Fuji BRC 19 butt cap: 0.595oz Not sure what guides you would use, but I have weighed the following set which I use on my rods: BLNAG 16-10-8 BUNAG 7(7) = .176oz TLNSG same set up = .101oz The current rod I am working on is a GUSA 80 Mega Mag (8' 20-40). 13" butt grip in EVA = 1.155oz, 7' Hypalon foregrip = 1.68oz, reel seat was a Fuji nonslip DPS20 mounted on a Flex Coat Arbor, which weighed in total 1.61 prior to reaming, and 1.46 after. Rod Bond to glue the entire handle (seat too) came out to approximately .130oz. I'm sure people have used more accurate scales and blah blah blah, but these are the numbers I got when I weighed everythign up on my scale, and are good enough for me. I think you can get a general idea of weights based on some of this. Re: Ballpark - components weight on spinning rod?

Shawn,
I think that you are on the right track trying to keep the weight down on a Salmon/Steelhead rod and you are certainly correct that the handle and reel seat will add the most weight but I would not forget that added weight has much less effect on rod performance when near the butt of the rod than when added closer to the tip. The weight of the guides though less than the weight of the handle and reel seat will have more effect on rod performance than the weight of the handle and reel seat. The added weight of just a couple of additional guides can dramatically lower the performance of a rod. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
