How loose should a cork grip be???

Just thought about this question after I finished epoxying a couple of cork handles onto rods tonight, so the answer to the question will only be helpful for my next project!

How loose do you ream out a cork handle before you epoxy it to the blank? The reason I ask: It seems if it is a really tight fit, you are squeezing out all the epoxy before the cork handle ever gets slid up into position. Seems like a tight fit might not have enough epoxy between the blank and the cork. Of course too loose could leave gaps in the coverage and itmight break loose when you use the rod...

What thinks folks?

The adhesive needs to be put on farther up the blank before sliding the reamed grip onto the blank. This way the adhesive gets on the inner surface of the grip. Twist and turn the grip as it contacts the smaller diameter area of the blank so that the adhesive gets the inner part of the grip coated fully. Then slide the snug fitting, reamed grip into that final resting position...

The adhesive should coat from this area down to the final resting spot, though. Not just up above...

Also, too tight may cause it to split during installation.

I ream it to fit it's exact location on the blank, ( without forcing it ) then epoxy it using the method outlined by Randy above.

In the case of cork grips they can be quite snug on the bare blank. The adhesive will provide lubrication to slip them in place using the method Putter describes. I recommend using Rod Bond as your adhesive as a very thin film will make a very good bond. One thing to avoid is a grip so loose that the adhesive has to fill as a shim in addition to a bond.

I guess my method of filing them to fit tight is stil the ticket. And I do make the epoxy is over the whole surface of the blank.

Tight fit is good but before gluing try running a triangle file lengthwise inside the grip before gluing. It doesn't affect the overall tightness, but allows a place place for the adhesive to go..Same principle used for the wood inserts really.
