Decals - does it matter when you apply them to the blank

I am building a rod and would like to get s decal from Decal Connection. Can you put a decal on a rod at anytime? Can I use the rod for a couple of months and then put a decal on it?

Thanks

Yes, as long as the surface is prepped properly. It needs to be clean before applying.

If it's over epoxy finish, you may have to use a very, very fine abrasive and possibly even re-coat it before applying the decal. If you do, allow that to cure before applying the decal. The old finish definitely would need to be lightly scuffed before re-coating or chance the fresh finish not sticking at all to the old finish.

Any scratch marks would show under the clear decal.

I have applied decals after abrading finish with an older, well-used piece of gray Scotchbrite with good results (without refinishing). I haven't tried a new, unused piece, though. My thoughts at the time were that it may leave those scratch marks on the finish.

If you do put the decal on later after using the rod, scoff the old finish, put a coat of new finish on, then the decal then another coat of finish Your better off for a clear decal

Been there done that.
