NEWBIE: so what the heck is shrink wrap for a rod handle mean?

Living in the pacific northwest I have never seen a method of rod handle known as a "shrink wrap"...can someone indulge me and explain? All I know is cork and synthetic cork....

what it was exactly? like is it just a thin wrap of plastic the same diameter as the blank or a couple of milimeters thicker..what is the "texture" like?

a link to pictures appreciated!

thanks

It could be a piece of "Heat shring" tubing like the stuff electrician use over wires. It is slipped over the cork (or whatever) handle and a blow dryer or heat gun is applied and it shrinks up to a skin tight fit. Most vendorws (I know Mudhole does) carry it.

The other is a plastic shrink wrap that many rod manufacturer's put over the cork to keep it clean and stop the cork fill from falling out of the handle before you get it home!

In the Northeast, alot of people will put it over EVA or hypalon to help protect the grip from the massive abuse a heavy Cod jigging rod gets on a typical Party Boat trip. Getting beat up in a rod holder on the way out to the fishing grounds, and then the grip gets pounded and smashed on the rail of the boat while jigging. Thats one use.

Mike it is frequently used in the pacific south west(so cal) slipped over cork tape then heat shrink it into place. The newest stuff I have seen looks and feels really great. I have some that feels almost like flocking and has a nice cross wrap look to it.

Very attractive and good feeling to the hands grips can be made by doing an open patterned cord wrap on a handle section and then using shrink wrap over it.

They look pretty neat as well.

Lots of stuff you can do...if the shrink wrap feels toooooo slick on the grip? ...when its mounted on an EVA or hypalon grip,, on a lathe...hit it with very coarse sandpaper (gently) to scuff it up. You'll end up with some long "shrink wrap hairs"....hit those with a little propane and you end up with a shrink wrap grip with additional grip!

Just don't dig too deep,(gently) the stuff is thin enough as it is, ...it gets thinner when its shrunk.
