Mick - I figured oils would discolor the thread, but they would stay darker rather than lighter after CP & finish. Maybe we should use oil as CP? lol.
You post 50 messages a day, so you can't be non-enthusiastic. You spend too much time on teh internet. Get your butt in teh Rod Room and start wrapping something. Quite a few of the wraps that are being done are by guys who are either new to teh craft (Seane), or have jsut started doing these wraps (Scott...who may also be new, I don't know him enough to say). No more posting, more wrapping. Re: Aaarrrgh!!!

I have not been at this too long just about 1 1/2 years, and done about 15 rods or so. Just starting to make a couple of $ on the side building rods. I just got orders for 4 ice rods(live in the Frozen Tundra of the North so go figure eh?) and maybe a couple of flyrods and spinning rods if the people make up their minds:) Re: Aaarrrgh!!!

Speculation on the cause of the dark blotch "Aaarrrgh!!!":
** Dye-bleed from unfixed spot on a very short length of the thread. ** Paint dissolving up from a pore in the rod blank finish. ** Ink from a marking pen, a stray stroke? ** Air-borne contaminant from person or air-conditionong system or insect. ** One of the visitors rains dirt when lean over anything. ** Somebody in the house has it in for you. (Sorry, hate to be cynical, but, ...) That is all far-fetched, but something did it. That blotch is definitely not anybody's imagination. But it is also less obvious than I thought it would be from your original description and reaction. That's a beautiful wrap, Scott. Kinda like a diamond with a small inclusion. It's still a 10 in hardness + beauty. -LOL, -Cliff Hall+++ Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 09/19/2005 12:18PM by Cliff Hall. Re: Aaarrrgh!!!

Mick - did you happen to do any further testing? The CP Mystery September 2005 has to be solved. Re: Aaarrrgh!!!

Billy,
Not yet, but I plan to. This is really bugging me after the oils did the exact opposite of what I had always assumed they would. I'm trying to figure out things to try. Marker ink, after shave, soap, cat sweat, etc. At this point I'm just grabbing straws. I'll get a pic put up of the oil mark. Re: Aaarrrgh!!!

I am no pro at this, but to put things in perspective, it is obvious that nothing in the blank, cp, and / or the thread can cause what I have seen in that picture of yours. It must be some sort of contamination that you were not aware of. It has to be something soluble in the solvent of the cp you are using and it has to be localized in that one spot (i.e. a permanent marker??)

After reading and thinking about this for the past few days, seeing the pics, etc - I think something had to happen when Scott applied the CP. It must have not covered every single thread, some epoxy got in, and spread out causing teh blotch. The thing is, it happened in a coupl eof spots, and is really weird that he would make the same mistake, in a few different spots, for teh first time on teh same rod. Maybe the CP is getting old?
DEfinately the biggest CP Mystery on teh Internet of all time, lol. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
