Good morning,
Went fishing last night with my Dan Craft 8'6" 3 weight, 4 piece. I slipped down a slope trying to get to a good hole and hit pretty good. I thought i only hit on the reel, but when i took the tip section off, i noticed that the male end of the third section had split. The split is about a 1/4" long. What would be the best fix? My first thought is to cut right below where the split ends and then make a new plug out of epoxy...what do you think? Carrington Tate Re: Not my FT!

That may work, but it will also reduce the overlap on that ferrule section by whatever amount you've cut.
Call Dan and see what he recommends. ................. Re: Not my FT!

CT: For sure a call to Dan would be the best route. FYI, however, I have removed the ferrule plugs from cracked/split male ferrules and filled them with RodBond, then (depending on the unique characteristics of the break) either wound masking tape around the tip or inserted into a female ferrule to keep the male perfectly round. If you do the latter, you'd better be sure to try and remove the tip within 6hrs or so or you may end up with a permanent single piece! After removing the masking tape you'll often need to CAREFULLY sand any ridges/edges down with fine grit sandpaper--don't remove anything with the sand paper other than the adhesive or any raised edges, or the ferrule may not marry perfectly. Also note this only works on cracks shorter than the length the male ferrule goes into the female. Anyway, I've done a couple this way and never had one re-break. Re: Not my FT!

Carrington,
I would recommend a new section and save that one for a spare. John has a good solution in the gluing of the split. I would not recommend cutting the male ferrule as this will shorten the connection and may cause further problems. Give me a call or e-mail. Dan Craft Dan Craft Enterprises Re: Not my FT!
