Nail polish over decals

I personalize the rods that I build with decals of the owner's name. It's a simple process, but then I put on epoxy and have to wait while it dries for 2+ hours on the rod dryer. Will clear fingernail polish do just as well to cover the decal? Will it dry smooth? It sure would make things go a lot quicker!

No it won't do the same job, but it will work, sort of, kind of. You can't build the same depth with fingernail polish as you can with epoxy unless you're willing to apply many coats. Nor will it have the same look as epoxy.

You can try it but I don't think you'll get the smoothness that you will want unless it's over a small area and/or you are not using quick dry stuff. I'd also be concerned with durability. Anything I've ever marked with any colored nail polish (gunsights, lures, engine parts, etc...) always needed retouching in a relatively short amount of time, even stuff that didn't see a lot of wear and tear. The clear stuff is pretty much the same makeup.

Just MHO, but quality is worth 2 hours waiting for a coat of permagloss to cure. If nail polish worked well, we'd all have been using it for a long time. Not saying that it can't work, just that it's not worth cutting the corner... again, just my opinion.

IMHO If it is not a fingernail, don't use fingernail polish!
