When you cut the tip off a fiberglass blank, how do you figure out its new lure weight rating...is there even a way to do this?

The best way is to use the CCS system as discribed in past issues of
RodMaker Magazine. If you go to the CCS data site on the left there are
instructions for getting the articles from Tom K.

Keep in mind that when trimming from the tip, even a very small amount makes a major change in overall blank action and casting weight range.

Here's something else you can do - tie a line around the tip where you plan to cut it. Peg it in place with a tightly wound rubber band so it doesn't slip fore or aft on its own. Now hang your desired casting weight on there and heft it and get a feel for how things are at different locations along the tip there. You should be able to find the spot where it feels most likely to cast well and then you'll know where to trim.

Eric - put a tip top on, and hang a piece of Mono 2 feet long, attach a sinker. I just read TK's post, do exactly that. Basically, you figure it out based on your experiance - you cast/fish enough to be able to tell hanging a desired weight off teh tip & bouncing it up and down if the rod will be able to handle it. When you find the spot you think is right, don't cut it there, cut it up higher towards the tip, and put a tip top on and make sure you still want to cut more off. Once it's off & a broomstick, you're screwed. I've had rods I left a little more on than I thought i ashould have, where I fished it 2 times and said yeah, I should take a little more off, and one in particular where I fished it and "invented" teh above guidelines becasue I took too much off, lol. I call it the Tuna Tog rod, a Calstar 800L cut to a 10 tip, and is completely useless for teh way I Tog.

That's good advice - you can always take off more if need be, but you can't put any back on.

And even after you've wrapped the guides, removing an extra inch or so from the tip isn't going to upset the guide spacing much if at all.
