I think Jim Kastorff could help you in this area. I know he has a lot of experience with tuna and spiral wraps. His email is sdrodblder@aol.com Re: standup tuna rod

Bryan Burbank - Did you go to the RBO LIBRARY ?
Or to the RBO SEARCH Message-Forum Archives?? The LIbrary has relatively little on Stand-up or Spiral Wraps, compared to an ocean of Replies on Stand-Up / Spiral Wrap. Fish thru the SEARCH feature with terms like: "Stand-Up; Spiral Wrap; @#$%&; 80" and you should get an deluge of Matches. Watch for Authors like Mantele, Lancaster, Reyna, Faulkner, Kirkman, Buky, Labanowski, Meirowitz, Tysinger, Ballard, Barret, Purcell, Bynaker. And if you go to the RBO PHOTO GALLERY and use the SEARCH Feature there, you will get even more ideas for your 80# Stand-Up Spiral Wrapped Rod. -Cliff Hall, Gainesville, FL-USA+++ Re: standup tuna rod

There is wide variety of information available. The volume 5 #6 issue of RodMaker has a very in-depth article on building stand-up rods. Get the rod length, butt length and fighting harness that will be used and then start looking. No need to even begin until you settle on these criteria - they will determine all the rest.

From just a few days ago here at RBO, "Looking for guides!!" by Michael Friddle. He wanted to find a supplier for the Spiral "Acid" Roller Guides = "@#$%&". [www.rodbuilding.org]
Aftco makes premium roller guides, but I don't know if they make roller guides for Spiral ("Acid") Wrapped Rods. SEARCH = "ROLLER GUIDES SPIRAL" [Message Bodies; Subject. 90 days] 9. Re: First 30-50# Rod Project Steve Purcell 06/16/05 [www.rodbuilding.org] "I am no expert but I am in the middle of building a stack of Seeker/Calstar rods. Just finished a 40-80lb Seeker with @#$%& spiral roller guides. Laying out a Calstar 765XL for underwrap right now." 8. Re: SPIRAL FOR WIRE LINE? John (Mantele?) 06/21/05 01:16AM [www.rodbuilding.org] "To avoid tip or wire damage, you would be wise to use a @#$%& Spiral Roller Tip, which is available from [shop.mudhole.com] or from All American Guides at [www.allamericanrollerguides.com] " Spiral Roller Guides: @#$%& "ACID ROLLER GUIDES" (TM), invented by JOHN MANTELE, manufactured by ALL AMERICAN TACKLE Authors to look for, for Spiral Wrapped Rods / Acid Rollers: John Mantele; Capt Neil Faulkner; Jay Lancaster, Lou Reyna, to name just a few. Bryon - As Docski mentioned Jim Kastorff Is a very nice and knowlegable individual re: sprial wrapped tuna rods and I am sure that he can help you out as he has me. As Tom K. mentioned you have a lot of decisions that have to be made before everything can come togather.
Food for thought re: guides Fuji HNSG, USG, LBSGK OR LRSG (or a combination there of) will handle most any line and can be wrapped sprial. You can also go with the sprial rollers designed offered by All American ( a sponsor to the left ) and perhaps the best choise for fishing large tune stand-up with 80+ test and also the spectra backing that will be used. lately I have been using different combinations of HNSG, LBSGK and SG guides for sprial wrapped rods from 20 to 60 lb test and they have worked GREAT!! for smaller tuna. Ahhh my favorite type of rod!
First off do you want to use rollers or conventional guides? If its rollers then the @#$%& rollers by AA are your only choice right now. My preference is Fuji LBSG heavy duty single foot boat guides. I've been fishing a Calstar 765ML spiral wrapped with these guides for a few years. I'm using 80# line and drag set at 27# at strike with no problems. I recommand that you don't use a bumper guide, but offset the first guide about 315 degrees (45 degrees left) as viewed frm the butt. The next guide goes at about 220 degrees. This should give you just enough offset so the clears the blank. Having the first guide set to the left also makes leveling the line as you reel easier. You push it to the right with your left thumb and it walks itself back to the left. The rest of the guides go on the 180 degree axis. To give you a place to start here's the complete specs for the rod mentioned above. Blank: Calstart 765ML Aftco gimbal rear grip 8 1/2" real seat: Aftco-2M fore grip 14"x 1 1/4" Guide dist from tip size location 1 41 1/2" 16 315 2 32 3/4" 10 220 3 25 1/2" 10 180 4 19 1/8" 10 180 5 14 1/4" 10 180 6 9 1/8" 10 180 7 4 5/8" 10 180 8 UST #9 tip 180 Good Luck!
