pocket butt cap reel seat...

Rod Builders,

I need some expert advise.

I'm trying to gather the reel seat components I'll need for building a dan craft fast taper 8wt.

I'm keen on keeping the handle simple yet strong enough to hold a #8 reel.

rather than two slide bands I've elected to use a rear mounted pocket butt cap bonded to the cork with rod bond.

please have a look at this graphic

the only hardware I've come up with so far is the Bellinger...

I suspect there are other manufactures tho haven't found them yet.

any ideas would be welcome.

thanks for a superlative forum.

Hi Marc,
I'm a little unsure what you are asking, but what you describe in the pictures I've done once with an uplocking REC reel seat - just drilled a hole in the butcap and made a small fighting but - no problem. But you need to make sure you can bore out the wood insert to the required ID. Maybe take a look at www.rec.com - they offer the cap/ring reel seat in different sizes and they can make the insert with different ID's.
Fitting a reel wont be much of a problem (but try before building though) since most (remember I said most) reels - from small to quite large - have the same size reel foot.

Peter

EDIT: just realised that you dont want a wood insert - forget about ID then - the rest can easily be done. You might just have to do a mortise in the cork if you dont choose to reduce the OD of the cork insert compared to the ring ID, make a flat side or an oval spacer - you need room for the reel foot.
Post pictures once finished please!

Marc,

The UL5 seats from Pac Bay sound like what you need. I have a couple of the end caps. Give me a call.
