This is my first spey rod got things pretty well figured out except for the stripper and tamer guide . . Thinking of a 20 for the stripper and 16 for the tamer . Is there a reason to leave both the same size or is reduction correct?Want to use high frame spinning guides .Because of the additional height should I reduce the 20 to a 16 for the stripper? Just try it.

I don't build spey rods but I think in general the taming guide is one size under the butt guide. Easiest way to figure this all out is to just go outdoors and try it for yourself. Get the placement down and then just swap out the butt or stripping guide and tamer with a few combinations and you'll find out which is best for you. Nike says, "Just do it." Rod builders should "Just try it." Re: spey rod madness

Excellent advice Mike. The reason for my hesitation is that I want to use titanium SIC guides, Buying ones that I dont need can be cost prohibitive, Re: spey rod madness

Bill, why don't you get a cheap set of testing guides of similar shape? Re: spey rod madness

Always a good idea to have a set of inexpensive ceramics, in the frame styles you use, on hand to use for testing. Once you find the right sizes, you can go back and order those expensive SIC's or Cermets or whatever.
