Ok, sorry for hammering the board with questions, here's my last one :-)

I have two rods from a buddy who wants me to redo the handles. They are a bit odd - 11'6" long steelhead rods (Gander Advantage, made by St. Croix). the foregrips are VERY long, like 12-13", and the butt grips are about 5" long. Odd. Anyways, he wants me to reverse these - so I am looking at removing all the cork, the reelseat, and building new handles. I'm hoping to remove and save the reelseats anyways - I have read about soaking them in boiling water and herein lies my questions:

1.) wouldn't boiling water potentially breakdown the blank? I also build golfclubs, and I know that you have to be VERY carefull when applying heat to a graphite shaft, or the resin melts and you have a large mess.

2.) Are there any other decent methods for reelseat removal, or should I just dremel the thing off of there and start from scratch?


3.) any other tips?

Don't waste the time and take a chance of potential damage. Carpet Knife for the cork removal and split the seat carefully with the dremel and split off with a screw driver. Also remove all guides and put the cork on from tip end. He could hang these on the wall and call them antiques and have you build him two new ones.

On the reelseat I use a band saw and cut down the edge without cutting into the blank and then spliting the reelseat with a screw driver.

I also build golf clubs (Reddog) and can tell you that I WOULDN'T heat the reel seat to remove it from the blank. TWO different animals!

Try some of the methods the rod builders here are suggesting- but don't use heat.
