Hello, I'm trying to build a acid rod for bass and tuna, I'm just not sure where to start, what type blanks are used, guides and guide placement and angle also which way do the guides go, left or right.
I would appreciate any help in order to start my next project, Boy is this rod building addictive.

Thank You very much, Brian

Hey Brian,
Yes, addictive and without a cure that I am aware of ! It appears also that
the only things that can pull me away from this forum is WORK and RodMaker
magazine ! LOL !

I haven't built a spiral rod yet but have been researching the task. You can
do a search fo the board entries and get a lot of info. Also, a recent issue of
RodMaker Magazine has covered a new spiral system they call the "Bumper
System". A search will find many posts about that one as well. Also, try the
library while waiting for someone else to chime in who has actually built one.

I assume you are planning to build 2 rods? 1 for bass and 1 for tuna?
For the tuna rod my first choices would be a Seeker, Cal Star or if you can
find one a Sabre ( Sabre rods were built by California Tackle Co. but they
sold out to Penn years ago ) Back then Sabre blanks were by far the favorite
of builders in So Cal. and many tuna are still being whipped with Sabre rods!

There are many great blanks for what ever type of bass fishing you are doing
and I suggest to check out the sponcors on the left.

Hope this points you into the right directions.

There are many, many varities of spiral wraps. The volume 6 #5 issue of RodMaker covers most of them in one compilation. You might find that helpful. Otherwise, do a board search for terms like "revolver rod," "spiral wrap," or "bumper wrap."

Do you know of any illustrations on this acid wrap rods, just to make sure I'm doing it right way and not screw things up, that's the last thing I want to do as I'm being talked into trying long range tuna fishing out of San Diego.
Thanks to all of you trying to point me in the right direction, Brian

The Volume 6 #5 issue of RodMaker has photos and illustrations of most of the popular varieties of spiral wraps. You could possibly do a Google search and see what might be on the internet, but I don't think you'll turn up much in the way of illustrations there.

Contact the two west coast gurus of acid wrapping, Jim Racela and Jim Kastroff, both of whom reside in California and are familiar with standup fishing San Diego Long Range Style. Both posts here on this forum and are very helpfull.
