Paint Penk Smudging help

Tried using a gold paint pen from the local hobby shop for rod lettering. Put down the base coat of finish. Allowed the base to dry adequately. After drying, I scuffed the finish with a pad to create an adherable surface. Asked wife with her artistic touch to write teh inscription on rod. Allowed to dry for 4 full days.

Put finish coat on this morning - smudges. Clearly the clear coat started to dissolve the paint finish but why?

Interested in comments.

Thanks,

Jeff

I had problems even with CP and my gold pen, so I started using Krylon Crystal Clear in a spray can. Seems to work pretty well so far, but I've converted over to decals almost exclusively. Much nicer to deal with IMO.

Yeah, I used to do decals exclusively with Decal Connection. But this is a CALSTAR and I did not want to go through the hassle of getting a decal with that manufacturer name on it.

I use the gel pens from Cabell's and dry them with a hair dryer several times to be sure. Clear it in about 2 hours, no problem
