Help the newbee- please!

Last rod I built was probably thirty years ago, and only the one. Not totally un-handy however as I've been building top quality golf clubs for about twenty five. Therefore I'm familiar with with spines, finishing, fitting, gluing, etc.And I have all the equipment which can be modified and converted for rod building use.

To the questions- For starters I'm looking for inexpensive blanks to start and practice on. It looks like Cabela's has about the best selection I've found in my price range. Any other suggestions? Second- I want to build a 6' casting rod. All the blanks in the preferred weight and action I've seen are one-piece, and I want a 2-piece rod. (I've broken every one-piece rod I've ever owned)

So- Will I change the action if I cut it and add a ferrule?

Or- why can't I take a 7 foot (or 6'6") spinning blank in a 2-piece design and lop a foot off the butt? I'd probably have to start with one of faster action (me thinks)?

Thanks for the replies, and thanks for the great forum resource.

I know of an exceptional quality 6 ft 2 piece 12 - 20 lb line blank at a great price. If you can live with a 6 1/2 ft blank there are some spin jig blanks that are two piece in 6 -12 and 8 to 17 lb class. There are some extra fast 6 1/2 ft mag spin blanks also around. Also

D.L.
I suggest trying the sponcer links to the left. I am sure one of them
will have what you are looking for.

Yes, if you cut a longer blank down to the length you need you most
certinly will change the action! ( removal from either end will slow the action )

Good Luck,

I'm also a newbie. I've built two rod so far, both of which have been with Cabela's blanks. Since their blanks are fairly inexpensive it seems like a great way to build your skill set before move onto more expensive rod blanks.

Nothing wrong with Cabelas blanks and they're a great company to work with. But keep in mind, plenty of the sponsors to the left sell blanks as good or better and at the same or even lesser price. They also sponsor this forum.

Mucho thanks for the responses. I have finally searched (all) the sponsor sites, and have come up with some blanks that meet the criteria. Intially all I was seeing were expensive blanks, and getting discouraged. Done deal now- thanks again! Oh yeah- I'l be back with more questions later!

I strongly agree that we should be supporting the sponsors of this forum. Without them this excellent resource may not be possible. However, from a newbie stand point, it takes a lot of time to search through their links and find what you're looking for. It might help if the links were broken into different categories.
