Dennis Scott - dropping butt of St. Croix 4F864.4

Dennis,

I fear my e-mail response to you did not go through, possibly due to spam filtering - might want to check you spam folder or junk mail folder. Hopefully you see this. This is my best educated guess at what will happen. CCS will tell you exactly what will happen.

Steve

First, I think you are on the right track. That rod probably CC'd at 5.5/67 or so in full-length version and I would guess it would come in around 3.8/62 or thereabouts in the 3/4 length version. Do you know how to measure the blank with the Common Cents System? If not, I would recommend getting the information and doing that. Or, I would be happy to test the blank for you and send it back as long as you cover shipping in both directions. Figure $10 ($5 each way) and you will know exactly how powerful the rod is and what it's action is. I would guess that instead of the rod being a good 4/5wt. it will be a good 3/4 wt. and with a slower action than the full length version.

Let me know if I can help.

Hi Steve,

It seems you have done alot of flyrods by dropping the butt
section.... Well purely by boo-boo; I will be building my first one.
The rod is a St.Croix IV 4pc 8'6" 4wt. fly rod. Could you give me
some insight on what wt. rod this is without the butt section?

With the butt section it cast a 5wt line pretty well, but I think it
would have functioned better with a 4wt line. I'm thinking w/o the
butt section this will be
a 3wt rod. What do you think?

Your insight is appreciated,
Dennis Scott
