I'v dediced that on my next project I want a thin finish on my wraps. I've gotten some great info on these two products. Now my question is which to use. Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

Perm gloss will remain clear and is more durable than spar varnish.

I just had a problem with applying Spar on a decorative wrap. It is still tacky after 48 hours and there are areas of "snakeskinning" in the finish. I may be totally my bad though. I am presently reviewing my procedure.

Permagloss is going to be much tougher and clearer. But you may find it a bit harder to apply - it sets very quickly.

With the exception of bamboo rods, I coat all my wraps with Perma-Gloss.
I make a wooden spatula by squaring off the end of a popsicle stick and sanding it down lengthwise in a nice long taper, finishing off with 600 grit until I've got a paper-thin end. Next, keeping your edges nice and clean (not rounded), reduce the width of the stick to just a tad narrower than the width of the wraps you are going to coat.

With the rod section turning in your dryer (top surface turning away from you) dip the stick in the Perma-Gloss and and gently press the flat of the stick against the top edge of the wrap, allowing the finish to flow from the stick. It usually takes 2-3 turns to get an even coat.

I find this a lot easier to control than a brush, and it doesn't cause bubbles like a brush often does.
