I have a couple of rods I need to repair. One is a white Penn International that the paint is chipped down to the blank. Other than that, its fine. The other is a Berkley Select IM7 halibut rod that I'm re-wrapping, has large spots where the factory paint chipped off. I'm re-wrapping the whole rod. What's the best way to fill in the gaps? Repaint the whole blank? Do I need to sand all the old paint off first? The Penn International just has one good ding in it, but the paint's pretty thick.
Thanks. Phil Re: Question: Chunks taken off factory paint

Thanks Bill. I have read the articles though, they apply more for the thinner finish on the blank. I'm talking thick heavy paint from the factory rods. I've taken the finish off rods and re-permaglossed, but this is a bit different I think.... stuffs a lot thicker and harder to take off.

Try the dull knife way on a section and see how well it may or may not come off. It should you may have to work a little It will look a lot nicer if you strip the blank and refinish. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
