I’ve got a couple of fly rods that I have heavily used, and their cork handles look pretty beat up. In the past, I have stripped down the entire rods, and put on new cork handles. I don’t want to do that anymore.
Is there a way to repair these grips without stripping down the rods? And, can I prevent this if I used cork seal? What would happen to these beat-up handles if I put cork seal on them now? Re: Cork seal

Clean the cork grips using windex wipes and give them a lite sanding with 400 or 500 grit. Fill the gouges and voids with a good cork dust putty of your choice. You can now cork seal them or first repair gouges and voids in the grips f you choose too. Cork seal will permit them to easily be wiped clean with a clean damp cloth. It will not prevent wear to any appreciable extent. To fill in voids and repair gouges in cork grips; I use U40 rod bond and cork dust making a very dry putty , adding white titanium pigment dust to make the putty more closely match the grip color. After filling the voids and gouges wrap the grip in plastic wrap and firmly spiral wrap masking tape over the plastic wrap. Let cure for over night. Remove the tape and plastic wrap and give it a lite sanding to blend in the putty filled voids and gouges. Then coat with U40 cork seal following instructions on the cork seal container. Hope this helps Joe Kassuba His Rod Shop Joe Kassuba Re: Cork seal

Depending on the taper of the butt section as well as the bonding agent used, you may be able to just boil them and slip them off to the rear of the rod, meaning no rewrap of the check/hookkeeper/inscription/stripping guides/etc.
