My latest Musky rod has several layers of "D" weight thread. The guides have two layers, an underwrap with guide wrap and separate trim wraps on top. The decorative butt wrap has varying thicknesses depending on how many threads are crossing each other and the base and forward finishing wrap also add a layer.

I've applied the CP and the first coat of "lite" Flex Coat to make sure it soaks into / through the layers as much as possible. As you might expect, there are high and low spots in the profile of the Flex Coat corresponding to the layers and gaps in the wraps. Is there a good method when applying subsequent coats of epoxy to ensure a level final result? Or . . . . is some variation in thickness to be expected / accepted?

On mine after I did 3 coats it was pretty level, I guess once the thickness gets greater than the threads thickness it will even out?

Those kind of wraps do take a few coats to get level . Try not ot put too much on per coat , that's when you will get the waves . Have fun , John

Next time coat the first layer of thread - packed well - this will insure it gets soaked well. let dry overnight. Then put the rest of you wraps on and coat. The CP will also help to fill in any gaps. let dry overnight.
Coat with clear untill level - make sure the rod itself is also level. All this material will add weight to the rod.
