Before I started building rods, my buddy built one for my dad. My buddy didn't really do anything wrong but heres the story. My dad told him he wanted a big tip and he got it. The tube size is to big for the rod. I've threw everything I've got at it and the stupid thing will not hold. He catches one fish and it's loose. We are going fishing in the morning and he wants to fish with this rod. I figure I will put a dab of epoxy on it, but yet again I run into another problem. Next week I'm going to buy the new tip. Can I get the epoxy loose with heat or boiling water without messing it up? Is there something better I could do tonight?

A little heat doesn't hurt the rod, and you will get the tip off. Have a safe trip, Bryan.

Try wrapping a layer of two of thread to build up the tip so it will hold until you get the new tip. I have had a couple of occasions where I had to do that.

I'd go with Doc's tip. The tip should stay put and yet you should still be able to get it off later. Do be careful when heating a tip top in order to remove it. If you overheat it, you'll ruin the rod blank tip. Never apply a flame to a tip top for more than about 3 seconds or so.

Do like Doc describes in a pinch. But - be careful in applying heat to remove excess _______. You did not say what kind of a blank nor what you applied the first time around. If it is a hot melt gentle heat will soften and the thing will come off with a little straight out pull - do not heat and twist. If you used an epoxy other that the five minute variety the heat required may prove to be detrimental to the blank. Repair with no heat and then come back to the board with a little clearer picture and maybe someone can help.

Thanks for your two cents. It's a St. Croix five casting with silicone carbide guides. I used 2 kinds of hot melt. I've wrapped the thread on and glued it on so hopefully it will be good in the morning.
