Cork sheeting in grips

I would like to build a fly rod grip alternating 1/4"& 1/2" cork rings laminated with 1/16" & 1/8"dark cork from cork sheeting material. Has anyone done this and will the materials sand well together, will the sheeting break out or will the binders in the cork sheeting cause any problems while sanding the grip to shape... Bob.

If you use double sided tape and attach the sandpaper to a flat piece of board (preferably a 1" x 2" ) and use it to sand the cork, the rigid surface of the 1" x 2" will help keep the sanded surface even. ! use a 5/4 x 12" and use double sided tape to put a different grit sandpaper on each side. Ralph

If at first you don't succeed, go fishing, then try, try again.

I wouldn't use cork sheeting used for pin boards and decor as I have had problems with some of that chunking. The stuff used as gasket material is very stable. Used to come in colors too if you bought from a larger supplier. Major cities have them.

I've used quite a lot of sheet composite cork that is found at Lowe's etc., and have never had a problem with loosening particles. Have also used a bunch of various cork & rubberized -cork gasket material with no problem at all. The various other gasket materials seem to work well also.

As Ralph mentioned in his post, you would want to use a back-up block with the sandpaper to get the various materials level with one another.

Before trying the composite cork sheets the first time, I cut off a piece of it and boiled it for about 10 minutes to see if the adhesive would stay sound. It did.
