By all means do a search here on the board archives and also read the article in the online library concerning rod refinishing. Tons of info on painting and refinishing blanks in here.
I think you'll be better off by color tinting some Permagloss or similar urethane and killing two birds with one stone. It'll be quicker and lighter to boot. ....................... Re: painting a rod blank

I just finished my first paint job. I used the Krylon Fusion paint. I used a tall box with one side cut off & hung the sections from a piece of string. It made for a dandy spray box. The paint went on smooth, like most sprays. I just rotated the blanks and made the coats thin & even. The paint, when dry, seemed to stay slightly tacky for quite a long time, several days in fact, but then it stiffened up nicely. I tried Tom K's suggestion of running the rod through a foam paint pad soaked in Permagloss, but that removed some of the finish & I had to paint again (perhaps if I had waited for the rod to completely set up?). I had used the paint on nonfish stuff before & it held up nicely so I wrapped right over the paint with no finish added. So far no problems.
