How many coats do you like using, how long of a time between coats? do you thin yours?

I've been using Flex Coat straight out of bottle , 24 hrs. dry time, put it aside, and do work on something else, but it can be force dried in several hrs.

I've been using the U-40 stuff with a drying time from 2-8 hours depending on the urgency of the build. No problems so far, but I know some guys here wouldn't suggest such a short dy time in between CP and epoxy (I use FC lite).

Overthinning, or even thinning at all, can be a major mistake. If you find it manageable out of the bottle, use it full strength. If you do thin the water based preservers, use distilled water, not tap water. If you thin the urethane/acrylic types such as Gudebrod or Glass Coat, use alcohol. Go easy - the ratio of solids to solvent in any of these is pretty low. When you thin them, you reduce that amount even more. In many cases if you thin too much all you'll actually be putting on the threads will be water or alcohol, and neither one of those will seal your threads.

I use flexcoat and thin the first coat about 20 percent. I believe I get better penetration. I let it set over 4 hours then apply a full strength second coat. It works for me.

I would think that when you thin CP, you are only getting more penetration of the liquid which is not what seals/preserves the color. The solids that are present in the CP is what does that, not the liquid. If you water down a shot of Jack, all you have is a weaker shot of Jack!!! By thinning CP, you just weaken it's ability to do it's job. If you think about it. if there was any advantage in diluting it, the manufacturer's would do it and save a lot of money in the process!\

One heavy coat of Flex Coat. Wipe the brush with a paper towel then wisk away any excess. Let set until dry.
