Lathe speed

Good news. I am now up and running with a Jet mini and turning my own reel seats and handles. I am soliciting info in turning speeds for sanding and shaping handles. Info on rpm's for boring wood reel seats, turning with tools, and sanding the seats would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Bob it's in the new issue of Rodmaker I think. Seem to recall seeing it. Check your new copy and look in the Q&A section. Seems like there was a formula there for determining the proper speeds for the various types of lathe work.

It all boils down to surface feet per second. I sand most stuff around 2500 to 3000 RPM. I cut back the RPMs to about 1000 to 1500 for rough turning and speed up a bit for finishing. Drilling or boring I usually stay around 500 RPM I don't want things to get too hot or they want to seize up.
