Fixing a broken tip

I have a 6'6" spinning rod that I made for a customer. He brought it back to me and it was broken right above the second guide from the tip. (user error) Would it be possible to take a small nail, coat it and the holes with rod bond and instert it between the broken pieces with 1/2 inch in each end then re-position the guide over the break and wrap and coat it with epoxy? Would this be a waist of time? I could put a tip where it broke, but it would be a short and stiff blank for freshwater fishing.

Thanks in advance, Tim

The nail won't give and the rod would likely break just above where the nail ends. You should really read Ralph O'Quinns article on repairing broken rods in the LIBRARY above. Just click on the LIBRARY button and then click on that article and read it. It'll give you all the info that you need.

Don't try fixing it with a nail or wire. I've repaired rods using an insert made from another broken blank, and in some cases I use a sleeve from a piece of blank over the break. It's important to have similar material and be able to have a good fit with the repair components. I use regular rod building epoxy and have had excellent results, both performance and appearance wise.

If it's graphite, you'll want to use a less stiff material than graphite. Again, read the article by Ralph O'Quinn in the LIBRARY!!!!

It's an easy fix. If there is any doubt about what Putter said twice, I'll say it again......READ THE LIBRARY ARTICLE.
