2 piece Blank Help

I recently build a two piece rod as a gift. I purchased a 2 piece blank with the built in ferrel. The ferrel cracked on the first cast. I had wrapped the ferrel for reinforcing and epoxied it. The crack is visible through the thread and enough so the tip section is loose.

Did I miss something? I have used mass produced rods that had no reinforcing. This is the first two piece rod I've built. Advice is welcomed.

Thanks,,
Ron Hord

What type ferrule? Tip over the butt or tip into the butt. The latter one is notorious for cracking! What type blank? Who made it? I'd send it back for replacement. Maybe it had a crack or flaw in it to begin with. Did you put your reinforcement wrap right down to the very edge?

Ken, Thanks for the quick reply. Tip over butt graphite. A Cabela's graphite 6'6" spin. I tried to get down to the enge. How critical is it going right to the edge?

The most pressure is put on right where the female portion of the ferrule begins; the wrap should start within 1 mm of the edge of the ferrule to protect it the best. I start a thread width from the end on ferrules.

For future reference, you might find it easier to start away from the ferrule and then wrap towards the opening. That seems to make it easier to stop it just near the edge of the opening. It may also be helful to have the rod assembled while you're doing this. That way you can support the rod on both sides of the ferrule. Just makes it a little easier to handle, I think.

did you put the rod together tightly and did you make your wraps tight?

i find it best to leave the ferrule a little loose and make my wraps a little tighter than i would for a guide.
this will help keep the ferrule from expanding too much when in use.

if you put the wraps on loose when the ferrule was very tight you might not get loading you need to avoid damage to thr ferrule.
