Fishing with taped guides

Popping in for a quick question. Many test cast with taped guides.

Any here actually FISH with taped guides to test the guide placements? Is masking strong enough or do you use something stronger but does not leave a residue?

Thanks,
Mo

That seems like a pretty iffy proposition. Masking tape really doesn't have any strength. It certainly isn't something I would try, too much risk to the blank for me.

Mo,
Did it by accident one time. Was building a Rainshadow IST 993 as a spiral wrapped casting rod and the fellow was going to throw spinners and small spoons with it. So off to the Washougal River we went.
He was throwing #3 Blue Fox spinners during the test and Mr. Steelhead liked it just fine. Usually I remove the hook first, but Blue Fox have the hook attached directly to the spinner's wire, it wasn't my spinner, so I didn't cut it off. Held up fine for one 5 lb fish on blue masking tape.

Mo,
I do it all of the time on my fly rods. There is a large pond near my house that has small bass in it and I tape the guides and go fish. A couple of wraps with 1/4 inch tape and away we go.
Cheers, Ellis

I would think that rods with guides on the bottom (fly, spinning, and spiral) would fish fine for a while with taped on guides. Rods with guides on top...well...I have a hard enough time keeping them in place while doing a static distribution test. I would imagine that if you fish with a taped up guides on top rod, you'll soon end up with a spiral wrap whether you like it or not!

I've caught many, many drum on rods with electrical tape on the guides, with the guides on top as well. Duct tape works also, and packaging tape with the threads in it is plenty strong, as is Tommy tape.

Thanks for all who responded. Helpful.

Jay, I found your reply particularly humorous.. Had a good chuckle about the spiral wrap.

Thanks! Great board.
