Here's my problem. I'm using Guebrod Goldenrod size A to wrap a rod. I CP the wrap (it looks like an evenly distributed coating), wait for it to dry, then finish it with FC Lite. Comes out patchy looking (some areas of the wrap are darker than others. Has happened a couple of time and I need some advice. Haven't had problems with any of the other colors I use. Thanks in advance. Shanon Hedgecock sth rod co. Re: finish problem with Gudebrod Goldenrod

Shanon,
let me guess, you are using non NCP thread. Almost always a non NCP thread will show some background colour, regardless of the use of CP. Tends to show up more when the thread is light and the blank dark i.e. sunburst on a black blank (only guessing) Stan Re: finish problem with Gudebrod Goldenrod

You need to be very careful to pack the threads against themselves very well when using lighter colors on darker blanks. If you were to look at your wraps under magnification, you would almost certainly notice that the dark blotches are actually areas where you're seeing the blank showing through between thread strands.

Just did a Purple over White [school colors] and since I don't use CP I double wrapped the size A NCP White underwraps and it came out perfect. Jesse Re: finish problem with Gudebrod Goldenrod

Shannon,
I just finished a green Rainforest with goldenrod A. I had the same experience with my first coat of FCLite. Unwrapped everything and started over. To remedy on the re-finish, and after doublechecking all my thread wraps were well packed, I drowned my thread with 811, and removed the excess as it dripped off the underside of the wraps. Worked like a charm. Very little overall color change even with the dark blank. I think I was too quick in applying CP in my first go-round. RB Re: finish problem with Gudebrod Goldenrod

Shannon,
Most likely the threads need to be packed more tightly especially light colors on dark blanks. Sometimes, I paint the area to be wrapped with white acrylic paint and put the thread over the paint. If you use a dark color or use metallic thread for trim bands the edges will be nice and neat and you won't have to worry if the white edge isn't exactly perfect. Using lots of CP then wicking off the excess is the way I always use CP. Works for me. Ron Re: finish problem with Gudebrod Goldenrod
