I just received my Grizzly hobby lathe and was wondering what tools (I guess they are called chisels) I should get to turn reel seats and handles. I have never used a lathe so please be specific.
Thanks Re: Lathe tools?

A gouge by all means, and then probably a round nose scraper. If you want to add a third, I'd get a pretty narrow bedan or parting tool. I can make most inserts with those three. In fact, you can do most of what you need to do with just the gouge and a bedan tool. Be careful that you get a general roughing gouge and not a bowl gouge (unless you plan on making bowls).

You should also lay in a supply of various grits of sandpaper, I use from 60 grit for shaping to 600 grit for the finish sanding. I would also get a few flat files with handles(don't want to catch on someting and tear up your hands) and maybe a round file or 2 for fitting or if you get into making some handles and want to try some different shapes or contours. For cork handles- a wood rasp and meduim bastard file, dust mask, and assorted sand paper as well as a 1/4" mandrel to mount the cork on. I don't think it's recomended to do wood inserts on the grizzly hobby lathe but if you are doing wood inserts, a 3/8" spindle gouge, 1/8" parting tool, face shield or goggles, and assorted drill bits to bore the inserts will do fine. Andy Dear's DVD is a good primer to get you started. He has the mandrels too. See Lamar Reel Seats on the left. Also you'll need a grinder to sharpen the chisels.
Have fun, Tony Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
