I was wondering if any one out there has used wood as a rod blank and if so what is a good wood to use and how would I go about making the blank? Thanks

This has been covered in depth in a past issue of RodMaker. Western Red Cedar is the preferred wood for several reasons. It was, in fact, the wood of choice prior to bamboo coming of age in rodmaking. The wood blank is planed from the outside to achieve the taper.
The specifics are in the RodMaker article. ........ Re: wood for rod blanks

I think it was Volume 3 Issue 2, Making Wooden Rods. There's an index of all RodMaker articles in the Library. Re: wood for rod blanks

Yes, volume 3 #2 has the article "Making Wooden Rods." It's quite good and something I think would be a heck of a lot of fun. Except for spinning your own wrapping thread, you can make every other part of the rod yourself.
