Winding Checks: More questions from a novice...

On my first rod, I used the rubber checks which came included with the handle. Everything went fine. For my second, I decided to try a nickel-silver item from Struble. The rod butt at the end of the handle measured .480, so I ordered the .485 size. It looks fine, but it really isn't working as a check as it wasn't big enough to fit over both the thread (size A) and the blank. It firmly anchored in place by the butt wraps, however.... Next time, how much room should I allow for the thread when using a metal winding check, other than waiting to measure a wrapped rod. Just curious if there is a "rule of thumb" others here use.
Thanks. Tight lines! Hunter Re: Winding Checks: More questions from a novice...

I made up a winding check chart that is included in an Excel spreadsheet I use to store information about the rods I build, and other information. The winding check tab correlates 64th measurement vs 1000'th measurements. I found that "A" thread adds approximately 15/1000" to the diameter of the blank.

Next time try a fine file and take a little out from the inside and get it to fit.
Even sandpaper wraped over a scrap blank section. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/12/2005 10:48AM by bill boettcher. Re: Winding Checks: More questions from a novice...

for sizing a winding check I usually order it two sizes smaller than the butt of the blank and have no problem with it fitting over the thread. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
